Ardoch is a children’s education charity dedicated to empowering disadvantaged children to engage in learning and imagine a future filled with opportunities. The charity envisions a world where every child has the chance to reach their full potential through meaningful participation in education.
Driven by this belief, Ardoch works to enhance engagement, raise aspirations, and improve learning outcomes for children in disadvantaged communities. By mobilising community and workplace volunteers, Ardoch provides vital support to schools, ensuring students receive the resources and encouragement they need to thrive.
Literacy is a cornerstone of educational and lifelong success, yet many children face barriers due to their social background. A 2020 study revealed that 25% of Year 7 students did not meet expected literacy standards, with the challenges disproportionately affecting students from disadvantaged communities, First Nations Australians, and those living in rural areas. Ardoch’s programs aim to bridge this gap, giving every child the tools to succeed.
The Lyone Foundation has partnered with Ardoch to combat educational inequities by supporting the Writer in Residence program. This initiative connects published authors with classrooms in under-resourced schools, fostering creativity, literacy, and confidence in young students. Over four weeks, authors guide students through story creation, from generating ideas and developing characters to editing and illustrating their work. The program culminates in a professionally printed book and a celebratory book launch, where students proudly share their achievements.
Ardoch’s Writer in Residence program plays a vital role in addressing literacy challenges faced by children in disadvantaged communities. Literacy is a foundational skill critical to education and future success, yet many children from lower socio-economic backgrounds struggle to meet expected standards. This program bridges that gap by inspiring a love of learning and equipping students with essential skills. Its impact is evident, with 100% of participating teachers observing heightened confidence and self-expression in their students, while 68% of students reported greater focus and engagement in their education.
The Lyone Foundation’s $75,000 funding ensure approximately 13 Writer in Residence programs will be delivered across Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. These programs will provide 305 children with the opportunity to explore their creativity, improve their literacy, and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Each child not only becomes a published author but gains a sense of pride and achievement that can inspire lifelong confidence.
Additionally, the program builds community connections and strengthens relationships between schools, families, and students. By enabling children to express their unique voices and share their stories, the Lyone Foundation and Ardoch are shaping a brighter future for students facing disadvantage.
By supporting programs like Writer in Residence, the Lyone Foundation is helping children develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, fostering confidence, creativity, and a love of learning.
