Story Dogs

Story Dogs pairs children with a dog and its volunteer handler for weekly one-on-one reading sessions throughout the school year. These sessions are tailored to the child’s reading level, creating a relaxed, calm space that fosters learning and confidence. Sessions run for 20 minutes, using fun, level-appropriate books. Volunteers often speak through the dog, prompting the child to explain or “teach” the dog, such as saying, “Simba doesn’t understand this page, can you help him?” This approach builds confidence and supports comprehension at the child’s own pace.
The funds of $20,500 from the Lyone Foundation will support Story Dogs through their ‘Books for Schools’ program, which supplies nearly 2400 books to participating and additional schools. By expanding access to engaging reading material, this will help Story Dogs grow and sustain their program and continue their mission of making reading fun and helping children become confident, lifelong readers.
