A 12-seater bus to connect young people with big opportunities

For young people living across Victoria, getting to a program can be the first hurdle to taking part. As Anglicare Victoria’s Buldau Yioohgen Youth Leadership Academy grew, it needed a 12-seater bus to help First Nations young people reach its cultural, social and work experience activities.

In February 2021, Anglicare Victoria approached COS to see if the Lyone Foundation for support. The academy explained that the bus would make it easier for young people from across the state to participate, connect with Elders and community, and explore education, employment and leadership opportunities.

The Lyone Foundation approved the $43,000 requested for the bus in March 2021.

Later that year, Anglicare Victoria reported that the new bus was operational and being booked for events and pick-ups as COVID-19 restrictions eased. With multiple trips and the help of volunteer drivers, the academy estimated it could transport around 30 young people and family members each week to its cultural centre and activities.

The bus gave Buldau Yioohgen a practical way to bring its growing program within reach of more young people and families. Every journey offered another chance to participate, build connections and pursue a big dream.
