Supporting big dreams through Culture, community and education

The Lyone Foundation provided $127,000 across FY20 and FY21 to support Buldau Yioohgen, Anglicare Victoria’s Youth Leadership Academy and Work Experience Program for young First Nations people. During a year disrupted by COVID-19 restrictions, the academy kept young people connected to Culture, education and their communities while offering practical support to families.

Between November 2020 and October 2021, 33 young people and their families participated in the ongoing program, exceeding its target of 18. The team also helped families facing difficulties during lockdown, including with food shopping, emergency relief, medical appointments and emotional support.

One highlight was the Hike to Higher Education on Maria Island, Tasmania. The experience brought together 52 students and 17 mentors and staff for time on Country, cultural learning and conversations about life after school. Among the young people surveyed, 91% said they would consider university or a trade after Year 12, compared with 58% before the hike.

The academy also secured a temporary home for Darrango yan-dhan, a cultural centre in inner Melbourne where young people and families could gather, seek cultural support and learn from Elders. Other activities during the reporting period included Little Sista’s Day Out and a family camp in Lorne.

The Foundation’s funding helped Buldau Yioohgen continue its work during a difficult year, giving young people opportunities to connect with Culture, build relationships and imagine what they might do next.
