AFL Cape York House
Queensland Branch
AFL Cape York House is a charity that has created a model of care that enables young people to complete their education in a safe, culturally appreciate ‘home away from home’ environment. These environments focus on well-being and presently they are caring for 100 young people from 45 communities in their Cairns and Redlynch boarding houses.
The donation of $5,000 from the Lyone Foundation will assist with their project ‘Beds for Young People Boarding at AFL Cape York House for Boys’. They are currently needing to replace the mattresses across all 50 beds, as many of them are quite old. The cost of the 50 beds will be close to $40-50,000 however with our donation they will be able to make a starting contribution to this project. This will assist with an initial instalment of 6 mattresses to be assigned to some of their senior students. A good night sleep plays an important role in young people’s wellbeing and their ability to stay engaged at school and in daily life, so this is a simple but important need within the house.
